Too often, the colonizing West is painted as masculine and the territories are deemed feminine. Thus, to some, John Smith and Pocohantas are a part of Manifest Destiny. Too often, stories don't speak of Native Americans unless they speak of their encounters with the colonizers. (An example is in "Apocalypto" which could have been entirely Native, but just had to end with Spaniards coming to the Latin American shore.) So if you want to play with the Pocohontas and Smith characters, great! However, if you want to play with Pocohantas and Kocoum, without asking if foreigners have arrived, this toy gives you that option.In the Disney film, Kocoum has a mohawk with little hair on the sides. This doll has long hair on the sides AND a mohawk. Obviously it was easier to use your assembly line doll head and paint it reddish-brown then make a new doll head with no hair holes on the side. Supposedly the doll's clothing changes color in the dark or gets a new pattern or something. I haven't taken mine out of its box, so I can't vouch for that.I know there's a film called "The Indian in the Cupboard," but I wouldn't assume that there are many American Indian male dolls out there. This doll would be great for Native American girls and boys, but also any person interested in their child having a racially diverse array of toys.
